Did egypt governed gaz ?

Egypt has never governed Gaza in the modern sense, but its relationship with the territory has evolved significantly over time. Here’s a concise breakdown:

Historical Context

Ottoman Era (1517–1917) Gaza was part of the Ottoman Empire, administered as part of the Eyalet of Damascus or later the Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem. Egypt, also under Ottoman rule, had no direct control.

British Mandate (1917–1948) After WWI, Gaza fell under the British Mandate for Palestine, while Egypt gained nominal independence in 1922. No Egyptian governance over Gaza.

1948 Arab-Israeli War Egypt occupied Gaza during the war (alongside other Arab states) but did not annex it. It administered the strip militarily until 1967, treating it as a "trusteeship" rather than sovereign territory. Palestinians in Gaza were not granted Egyptian citizenship.

1967 Six-Day War Israel captured Gaza from Egypt and began its occupation, which lasted until 2005 (withdrawal of settlers and troops).

Post-2005: Hamas Control After Israel’s withdrawal, Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007. Egypt’s role since then has been limited to border security (e.g., Rafah crossing) and mediation, not governance.

Key Clarifications

  • No Sovereignty: Egypt never claimed Gaza as part of its state, even during its 1948–1967 administration.
  • Current Role: Egypt acts as a mediator in Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and controls the Rafah border crossing but does not govern Gaza.

Would you like details on a specific period (e.g., 1948–1967)?
